After 18+ months of almost no coffee, and just a little green tea, I've recently started drinking black coffee again. When I originally decided to stop and mentioned it to my doctor he asked why, specifically because coffee is a strong antioxidant and good for the liver. Anyway, I just started again in the last two weeks and this article from Runners World supports my decision.

Just Eat This: 5 Rules for a Healthy Diet
Eating well, for most of us, requires eliminating junk from our diets. Therefore, it's easier to tell you what not to eat. But based on the questions I receive, that's leaving you too much leeway. Since I can't tell each of you exactly what you individually should eat, let's have a look at what I eat, why I eat this way, and how you can alter my diet to suit your personality and lifestyle.
There are a few rules to achieving a healthy diet. These will give you a far greater understanding of why I do what I do. So let's look at them first.
There are many other scientific reasons for this as well. Some are proven, like allergies. Some are more speculative, like eating for your blood type, but all have some anecdotal evidence that they work, which is all the validation we need.
Dairy products are the best example to illuminate this point. There is plenty of science showing both pros and cons to consuming them. But regardless of what science tells us, some people do well eating dairy and others do not. When a food allergy is suspected, eliminating dairy is the first step most nutritionists recommend trying. It often yields great results, but not always. This makes dairy a food group that some of us can eat and others cannot.
Similar examples can be found within any food group. What it comes down to is that, no matter how you want to eat, you're going to need to evaluate your diet and see how it's working for you. This requires some trial and error. While that probably sounds daunting, read on and you'll see that it's not. By cleaning up your diet and eating for what you are doing, it becomes fairly easy to identify foods that agree with you and those that don't.
RULE 2: EAT FOR WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO BE DOING.
Furthermore, most of us have different periods in our life where we not only do things differently on a daily basis, but have different goals. Some common goals, where diet and lifestyle are concerned, are:
- to lose weight
- to gain fitness (regardless of weight)
- to maintain weight
- to train for an upcoming event
RULE 3: THERE ARE THINGS YOU SHOULDN'T EAT.
Or, at a minimum, that should never be in your kitchen. These are items that, somehow, have made it onto our daily menus that we could easily live without and, at least, should be treated as desserts, anomalies, rewards, or emergency rations. For a more complete list, visit your local 7-Eleven. Let's look at the major offenders.
Soda. How soda has made it into our daily lives is a testament to marketing. It's a dessert, at best, and when consumed daily makes it nearly impossible to have a balanced diet.
- High fructose corn syrup. It's
not just for dessert anymore. HFCS is now found in bread, salad
dressing, and probably 80% of the stuff at most convenience stores. It's
not just that it's bad for you; it's also an indication that a food
item is made using the lowest-quality ingredients possible. A 15-second
label check can protect you.
- Trans fats. These
man-made fats help foods sit on shelves longer but serve no nutritional
purpose for you. They do, however, have a terrible downside.
Fortunately, they're on the dangerous food radar and now much easier to
detect.
Alcohol. Again, it's not so bad in moderation but as a daily accoutrement to your diet you're adding a lot of calories and very little food value. While I'll be the first to extol its merits as a reward, it has no true place in your daily diet. This will also help to understand which alcoholic beverages are better than others.
- Splenda, aspartame, and Sweet n' Low. Calories
aren't the only thing to worry about. These sweeteners have been proven
safe enough to not kill you but have no place as a regular part of your
diet. They also can lead to an enhanced sweet tooth, something that
won't make your fitness goals easier to achieve.
Your body is very resilient. Your mind, however, can be the opposite. A constant client excuse is to quit a program due to some type of misstep that they've stigmatized as "I've blown it." That's not how it works. As long as the big picture is better than what it was before, you'll be making progress. One bad meal, day, week, even month doesn't matter. All that matters is that you're moving in the right direction. As long as you're doing better than you were before, you'll feel and look better than you did before. And the fitter you become, the more your body programs itself to toss out those bad days.
Translation: the more fit you are the more you can cheat. It's one of the best examples of being rewarded for your work in the natural world.
RULE 5: IF IT'S PROCESSED, DON'T EAT IT (well, sort of).
But you don't have to avoid all processed foods. As we learn to read ingredients and understand what types of nutrients our body needs we'll see that not all processed foods are evil. Look for processed foods with whole food ingredients. An easy guide to processing is the fiber content on the label. The more processed something is, the less fiber it usually contains. And fiber is your friend.

Test Your Metabolism IQ
So do you think you burn hot, or not? Do you
know how metabolism works and effects your health and your weight? Maybe
you do, maybe you don't. Check yourself out by reading further:
FALSE: Your metabolism slows drastically because of age.
FALSE: Your metabolism slows drastically because of age.
-
People's metabolism does tend to slow a
bit as they age, about 5% per decade, but the biggest change isn't
because we're getting older, it's because we're becoming more sedentary.
As we age, many of us enter a vicious cycle of decreasing our activity,
which causes us to gain weight, which causes our metabolism to slow,
which causes us to have less energy, which causes us to be more
inactive, which causes us to gain more weight, etc. The reason you
didn't gain weight as easily when you were younger is probably because
you were more active. If you can maintain a comparable level of activity
into your golden years, you can keep your metabolism as high as it ever
was, or higher.
-
TRUE: Your metabolism is genetically fast or slow.
But this doesn't let us off the hook. Sure, a lot of us were dealt some bad cards genetically, but our genetic predisposition is only a fraction of what influences our metabolism. Behavior, in terms of what you eat and how active you are, is many times more important then the metabolism you were born with.
-
FALSE: Heavier people have a slower metabolism.
The good news for heavy people is it takes a lot more energy to haul that carcass around, so heavy people will actually have a much faster metabolic rate to produce the energy they need for day-to-day activities. The bad news is that in order to lose weight and maintain long-term weight loss, they will have to make greater and longer-lasting changes in diet and exercise to keep the weight off .
-
TRUE: Men metabolize alcohol better than women.
This has nothing to do with the fact that men may be bigger or have a higher tolerance because of their vast experiences at keggers. It's because men produce an enzyme in their stomach that women do not. This enzyme is responsible for metabolizing alcohol more quickly, so only about half as much alcohol enters the bloodstream of a man as a woman. So in that famous scene from The Thin Man when Nora Charles asks the bartender how many drinks her husband Nick's had and requests he line up an equal number for her, she's actually setting herself up to get twice as drunk as Nick. As tolerance grows, both genders will metabolize alcohol faster, so the ladies could conceivably catch up, but they start at a huge disadvantage.
-
TRUE: Eating certain foods can speed up your metabolism.
But eating any food will speed up your metabolism—at least in the short term. Some studies have shown that some food and drink such as hot pepper, green tea, and caffeine can give you an extra short-term calorie-burning boost, but for a long-term change to your metabolism, overall improvements in diet or exercise are necessary.

Quinoa Burgers - First Attempt Fail, Second Try Awesome!
My first ever cooked quinoa burger. Read on to see how I made it.
After I posted a photo of one of our quinoa salad recipes last week our daughter sent me a recipe, or rather an ingredients list, for quinoa burgers she'd had at a restaurant in southern Maine.
Here's the original ingredient list:
quinoa
black beans
corn
oil
salt and pepper
garlic
Parmesan cheese
bread crumbs
sauteed onions and peppers
When I asked her about amounts she said the proprietress said she didn't measure, she just put in "enough". She also said that some recipes she saw called for egg whites to help bind it all together but she didn't use them because it seemed icky to her.
So, as you can tell, the recipe was kinda loose. Here's my ingredient list:
1 cup of dry organic red quinoa with two cups of water - yields about 4 cups cooked
1 cup of mixed dry black beans and pinto beans - soaked overnight and cooked
1/2 cup of frozen corn cooked
1/2 cup of chopped onions and 1/2 cup of chopped green bell pepper, sauteed in extra virgin olive oil
1 cup of freshly grated Parmesan cheese
1 cup of Progresso plain bread crumbs
2 teaspoons of minced garlic
3 egg whites
4 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil.
So I mixed it all up and then used a cup measure to create each burger. Basically I got a cup full and then compressed it with a spoon and popped the somewhat tight burger onto a piece of wax paper. This ended up with seven good-sized burgers.
The next step was to cook them. I was a bit leery about grilling them as is, which is what the restaurant owner said she did, but maybe a restaurant grill is different from our gas Weber. So I tried with just one burger. Here's what it looked like on the grill:
So it looks like it's maybe OK, right? Well, flipping it was a challenge. After cooking for about 3 minutes on a side (medium high heat), I took it off the grill and it was a mess.
Here's what the grilled burger looked like (after a bit of reconstruction):
And here's what the grill looked like:
So, even though the direct-on-the-grill quinoa burger actually TASTED DELICIOUS, it wasn't something we'd ever serve to guests and it really was kind of a mess.
So next we decided to wrap the remaining six burgers in aluminum foil:
And put them in a grill top cooker we bought years ago (I forget its original purpose, maybe for grilling shrimp).
We eventually decided to cook just three of them so we'd get two meals from the six burgers (figuring we'd each have one and a half). Here they are on the grill:
Again we cooked them about three minutes on a side, with the grill top closed about half the time.
Here's the final result:
So maybe it doesn't look like a burger, and it doesn't taste like beef, but I gotta tell ya, it was fabulous (is it OK to use that word?). We served it with Roasted Root Medley (a combination of sweet potatoes, carrots, white potatoes, and onions) and with cantaloupe with fresh strawberries. And guess what? Neither of us had room for the extra half of the third burger, so we saved it for another meal.
Bottom line, GREAT veggie burgers. Can't call 'em vegan because of the egg whites, so try it without if you'd like (maybe with a bit more olive oil to held bind them together?).
The Rock n Roll Lifestyle Nearly Did James In
In James' own words:
"All I ever wanted to be was a Rock Star. So after high school, I hit the road to make my dream come true. The ups: meeting people, traveling, and performing. The downs: terrible eating habits, dollar menus, and massive amounts of booze. But then I gave it all up when my daughter was born. What I didn’t give up were my bad eating habits. And since I was no longer jumping around a stage like a madman every night, I quickly ballooned up to 240 pounds! Not only was disgusted with myself, I was exhausted all the time and couldn’t keep up with my kid—so I turned to P90X.
Sure, P90X was hard. But what was even harder was giving up the donuts and cheeseburgers. Pathetic, right? Because I didn’t change my diet at first, I barely saw any results. Of course I blamed it on the workouts. Then I found my Beachbody Coach, the P90X nutrition guide, and the Beachbody message boards—and those three things are what got me in line. After plowing through P90X and getting in shape, I had no choice but to do the sequel.
I thought I got great results with P90X, but after doing P90X2, I was blown away. P90X2 was great because it really strengthen my core, which was my weak link (which isn't so weak anymore). My abs are now so much more defined and my stability has greatly improved.
Throughout my transformation I used three Beachbody supplements. Energy &Endurance Pre-Workout Formula®—which gave me a good kick in the pants early each morning. It lit my fire and helped me focus on the task at hand. I also took Results and Recovery Formula®. Man, this stuff is DELICIOUS—and effective! I remember trying to do a Chest and Back workout without it and it was brutal. Then there’s Shakeology®. If I had to choose one supplement to use for the remainder of my journey, Shakeology would be it. After just the first week, I’d wake up in a better mood and full of energy. Finally, my body felt fueled. Now I'm more upbeat and much happier. I can't imagine a day without it.
Thanks to Beachbody, I'm no longer the person I used to be. Gone is that guy who used to walk into a convenience store and head straight for the hotdog rack. Now I'm a product of the product. Friends and family have noticed my change and want to know how I did it, so I tell them. I've developed a passion—no, an obsession for this lifestyle and for helping others. I know I’m setting a great example for my daughter, my friends, and my family—and it feels amazing. Every day I look in the mirror and marvel at my progress, which makes me push even harder. I’m so excited to see where I can take this body of mine. Thanks Beachbody. And my daughter thanks you too!"
We have a P90X and Shakeology Challenge Group starting June 17. Let me know if you'd like to join us for this virtual workout group. For info on the combined P90X Challenge Pack, CLICK HERE.

Success!! We Finished the Beachbody Ultimate Reset
What a great feeling of accomplishment! Yesterday was the last day of the 21 day Beachbody Ultimate Reset program for Marge and I and today we took our 'after' photos and measurements.
I did reach several of my goals, though the greatest gains for me were the new foods, recipes, and ways to cook (and eat!) that we learned and practiced during the Reset.
I lost 4 pounds and 1% body fat. My original goal was to get down to 135, but that clearly would have been too extreme (losing 8 pounds in 3 weeks). I'm very happy to be at a consistent 139 (over the last few days) and also I did get to my 12% body fat goal.
It seemed like my weight was shifting during the Reset and the measurements bore that out. After the Reset I measured 1/2 inch less around neck, 1 inch off my waist, and a surprising 2 inches off my hips. Everything else is about the same.
I hoped to increase my sleeping duration, but there was no change there, my average for the 21 days prior to the Reset was 7 hours a night and during the Reset it was 6.95 hours, so no significant difference.
We were wondering if the Reset would be challenging. Everyone else we know who's done before it reported that they weren't hungry and if they finished they were happy they got through and felt energetic and happy. Most people also said they found the middle week, which is the detox week, challenging, with a variety of physical and emotional symptoms. I'm happy to report that not only were we satisfied by and happy with the meals and our results, but also we had no discomfort or emotional drama during the detox week - so that's a win.
We did find that, like other people before us, we spent more time preparing meals and shopping for fresh ingredients than we were used to. We also realize you can never have enough refrigerator containers, so that goes on the list.
So we feel good, we're both very happy to be able to get back (gradually) to our exercise programs. We have agreed that we have irrevocably changed our eating habits and going forward we're going to incorporate several of the recipes, new foods, cooking methods, spices, and even our eating behaviors because of what we learned during the Reset. And that's something we have in common with everyone we know who has done the Reset - everyone raves about the food and most even don't want to stop eating following the Reset menus and programs.
So yay! We're done. But yay!, we're not stopping or forgetting what we learned. Thank you, Beachbody.

My Next Challenge - the Beachbody Ultimate Reset
Stay tuned as I'm embarking on a new challenge starting today, the 21 Day Beachbody Ultimate Reset.
The photo on this post was my original Challenge in 2011 when I started having Shakeology for Lunch for 100 days and then added P90X for another 90 Days. In that time period I started at 181.5 pounds and 25% body fat and ended up at 146 pounds and 13% body fat - oh, and along the way my doctor took me off cholesterol medicine I'd been on for 11 years. My weight hasn't fluctuated too much in the last 14 months (this morning I was 143 pounds and 13% body fat), but I still have some goals.
I'm
going to re-weigh myself and take some new pics in the morning but here
are my goals for the 21-day program: I'd like to get back to my high
school weight of 135 pounds (very healthy for my 5'8" height and I'd
also like to get my body fat down to 11 or 12%). I also have some trouble
spots I'd like to reduce, namely some stubborn belly fat and back fat
(what people usually call 'love handles').
Since my system will be detoxing along the way in the 21 day process while I also learn to eat a whole lot of new foods (it's not a starvation diet by any means, lol), I'm also hoping to maybe sleep better. I'm the original I-don't-need-much-sleep guy, have been since college and in all those years I had averaged 4-6 hours per night. Now I'm realizing if I want to get stronger and healthier, and this last year I've been working at getting my sleep time up to 6-8 hours but it isn't always easy - I'm hoping by the end of the Reset I'll be sleeping like a baby for a full 7-8 hours every night.
I don't intend to keep a running commentary here about my experiences and progress (we have a Challenge group of 6 for that plus we're part of a group of 2,400+ around the country doing the Beachbody Ultimate Reset at the same time in a Challenge called Lean and Clean by Halloween). I will report back at the end, however, with before and after photos and data on weight and body fat changes, body composition alterations, and how the sleep thing goes.

65 Challenge Day! 12-15-11
Today is the day!
So, how about you? Will you challenge yourself to do [insert your age] pushups, situps, pullups, chinups, and then walk/run for 65 minutes? You can if you put your mind to it, decide, commit, take the appropriate action (which means eat right and exercise) and train for it.
I encourage you to do your own age challenge and I'd love to hear how it goes for you.
If you have health and fitness goals but haven't had success reaching them before, let's talk. My passion is working with people helping them reach their goals and I'd love to talk with you.

65 Challenge Day 20 12-13-11
This is Christmas party season! Three this week plus networking events 3 days as well. Having fun AND taking it very easy with desserts. I want to stay on track but allow myself to enjoy the parties - so making choices - like, OK, I'll hold off on the cookies but will try the meatballs! Yeah, life is tough.
Getting ready for Thursday's big challenge day. Today (Tuesday) I did the P90X X Stretch, then a 5K Walk/Run (third best time so far), and then Zumba class. I'm glad I'm doing all three as each adds something special to my workout routine. (And I'm grateful my business allows me to do all this!)
65 Challenge Day 15 12-8-11
Another running day, another good time. Today was a walk/run day in my 5K series. My time wasn't outstanding, at 35:03, but it was my second best overall time. I have reasons (excuses) for the slower time - it was about 10 degrees colder, plus the delay between my 50 minute P90X stretch was more than a half hour, rather than getting right to it as I did on Tuesday, when I had my best ever (so far) time, but the greatest win for me is that I am consistently getting the 5Ks in my routine and I'm totally enjoying them. After the 5K I also went to a Zumba class and was into it so much someone asked me if I was going to fly out of the room! LOL.
I have a week to go on this Challenge, till the 15th, and I'm really looking forward to hitting ALL the numbers that day.

65 Challenge Day 14 12-7-11
The 14th day (of 22) of my 65 Challenge was a good one for many reasons. One reason was that my early-ordered copy of P90X2 arrived (I'm starting that program January 1st!). Another pretty cool thing was I had my annual physical yesterday afternoon and my cholesterol, after being off cholesterol meds since May, are better than they were even when I was ON the prescription drugs! My LDL (the good cholesterol is waay up), my ratios are great, and my overall cholesterol is only 128! Right on Shakeology and P90X!
So now to today's walk/run 5K. I had a walking day, and the time was 47:58 - loads more than yesterday's 32:36 when I ran a little more than half the way. That's okay, though, because Thursday I'll run again, unless it's raining, and my time should be under 40 minutes again (if not a new personal best ... of course I'm hoping for that!).

65 Challenge Day 12 12-5-11
I realized over the past few days that I've been adjusting my P90X workouts in favor of my daily 5K walk/run.
That's not good, not the plan. P90X has been, is, and remains my primary workout regimen and it certainly has cardio, so I'm not lacking that. The walk/run thing is fun and a little variety, but it's not my primary deal.
What I found was I was not pushing quite so hard during P90X workouts, not really "bringing it" because I wanted to save energy for the upcoming walk/run.
So here's how I'm going to change that from now till December 15th (when this Challenge ends). Monday, Wednesday and Friday are my heavy workout strength and muscle building days with P90X, so on those days I'm going to do a fast walk. That's what I did today and my time wasn't all that hot, 45:44, just under a 15 minute mile.
On Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday I'm going to do the P90X Stretch (which is one hour of very active stretching) and then do the Walk/Run working for time by running as much as I can.
On Saturday, which is when I do P90X Kenpo X (a martial arts/boxing cardio workout), I'm also going to walk fast.
Of course on Tuesdays and Thursdays I'll also go to a Zumba class, so that will be a load of fun (I LOVE THAT MY JOB ENABLES ME TO WORK OUT SO MUCH!).
After the 15th I think I'll pretty much stick to the same routine, walking fast on MWFS and walk/running TThSu. Sounds like a great plan to me.
Oh yeah, one more public statement - I am not going to walk/run or even walk/fast in the rain - I just don't enjoy it. At this point I'm also planning that I'll only walk fast, not walk/run, when the outside temp is 35 degrees or lower.

65 Challenge Day 11 - 12-4-11
Well today was a beautiful day, and I had my best-yet 5K walk-run. It was 46 degrees (F.) when set out and about 50 when I finished. I didn't actually warm up or stretch much before the 5K, which isn't wise, but I started gradually and walked the first 2/10ths of a mile as sort of a moving warmup. My finish time was 36 minutes and 47 seconds, 2:08 better than my previous best time.
I'm a grateful, happy guy.

65 Challenge - Day 10 12-3-11
Had a great 5K walk today, but it was mostly a walk because when I started running, I felt a couple things I didn't like. May be overtraining a bit, or maybe a little too much too soon. So except for maybe 100 yards I walked. I moved along pretty fast, though, completing the 5K in 43:06.

65 Challenge - Day 9 12-2-11
So today I didn't wait till the end of the day to take the shot above (or the video below). I captured both immediately after I finished my 5K walk/run.
Mostly walking today, largely because I was on two pretty long phone calls during more than half the distance.
My time suffered, of course, finishing in 43 minutes and 45 seconds, but that's OK, I actually needed to recover a bit from yesterday's run.
Tomorrow I suspect I'll get a better time with more running than walking. I'm looking forward to it.

65 Challenge - Day 8 12-1-11
Another personal best on my 5K Walk/Run today. Maybe it helped that I started with an hour of stretching with Beachbody's P90X X Stretch. Whatever, it was a little chilly, but I just kept my head down and kept going.
Today I didn't stop to take photos with my iPhone or post Facebook Check-ins or read email. I just kept trucking. I finished in 38 minutes and 55 seconds. Since my previous personal best (just yesterday) was 41:18, I'm pretty happy. I shaved 2:23 off my time, which means of course that now I'm going to have to work even harder.
After the 5K I went to a Zumba class and had a blast! I had to hurry because I was running a bit late and didn't stretch right after running, so I stretched just before the class. Not really enough, I suppose, but it was OK. I sure was warmed up for the class!
Can't wait to see what happens tomorrow! My focus right now, of course, is less on weight or body fat, but on speed, performance, and endurance. Nice to switch it up.
65 Challenge - Day 7 11-30-11
OK, so no cart-pushing today, just me walking and running. Even though I had to stop to tighten the laces on a shoe, plus take some photos and upload them in a Facebook Check-in (lol), I still cut 2 seconds off my best time. So I'm pleased.
During the day I noticed that my quads and hamstrings were feeling it a bit, but in a good way, not tight, but just feeling exercised! Cool.
I love that I'm able to incorporate exercise and healthy eating and living in my job. 65 Challenge - Day 6 11-29-11
Oh-oh, it rained this morning.
I'm a big fan of rain, and I love to walk in the rain in cities and don't mind it when I'm hiking. However, I don't choose to run/walk in the rain, so today I bagged the 5K run/walk.
Instead, I did a P90X stretch workout and then went to a class.
Watch the video to see what kind of class I went to.
I'm really grateful to Marty and John Kosmeh who introduced Marge and I to Team Beachbody. As Team Beachbody Coaches our health and fitness is our business and we get to help lots of other people, too! Love it!
