Exercise for Depression and Anxiety

Gotta SHARE this excellent article. If more people knew what endorphins and endocannabinoids are and how they work and to what they are similar, perhaps the obesity trend would be over as everyone would rush (joke intentional) to exercise for those effects alone.

Depression and anxiety symptoms often improve with exercise. When you have anxiety or depression, exercise often seems like the last thing you want to do, but once you get motivated, exercise can make a big difference. So, how do you Exercise for Depression and Anxiety?

First you need to have a greater understanding on how exercise can make a difference in depression and anxiety symptoms. The links between anxiety, depression and exercise are not entirely clear, but working out and other forms of physical activity have shown that it can definitely ease symptoms of anxiety or depression and make you feel better. Exercise has also been shown to help keep anxiety and depression from coming back once you are feeling better and symptoms have subsided.

How does exercise help depression and anxiety?

Regular exercise for depression and anxiety may help ease symptoms in a number of ways, which may include:
  • Releasing feel-good brain chemicals that may ease depression (neurotransmitters, endorphins and endocannabinoids)
  • Reducing immune system chemicals that can worsen depression
  • Increasing body temperature, which may have calming effects
Regular exercise has many other psychological and emotional benefits, as well. It can help you:
  • Gain confidence. Meeting exercise goals or challenges, even small ones, can boost your self-confidence. Getting in shape can also make you feel better about your appearance.
  • Take your mind off worries. Exercise is a distraction that can get you away from the cycle of negative thoughts that feed anxiety and depression.
  • Cope in a healthy way. Doing something positive to manage anxiety or depression is a healthy coping strategy. Trying to feel better by drinking alcohol, dwelling on how badly you feel, or hoping anxiety or depression will go away on its own can lead to worsening symptoms.
Now that you have an understanding of how it can help, what can you do to Exercise for Depression and Anxiety? Research has shown that physical activity such as regular walking, gardening or other forms of physical activity may help improve mood. Keep in mind that Physical activity and exercise are not the same thing, but both are beneficial to your health. The same research has shown that those who used exercise that incorporated progressive resistance training, and cardiovascular training showed a greater improvement and maintenance of depression and anxiety.

Exercise for Depression and Anxiety

With that said, many people don’t seek out exercise because they don’t want to go to a gym or fitness facility due to their depression and anxiety. So what is the answer?

The answer is to utilize at-home fitness and exercise programs such as Beachbody’s 21 Day Fix, P90X, TurboFire, Insanity, and others that provide resistance and cardiovascular training in a planned and structured format. This progressive exercise combined with a structured plan, and where you don’t have to leave your home is great way to create that improvement or maintain that Exercise for Depression and Anxiety can bring to a person.

One of the other things that many people don’t have with going to the gym to exercise for depression and anxiety is support. With a Beachbody Club Membership, each person gets a FREE Coach to support him or her. This can be a great benefit to those who have to exercise for depression and anxiety. If you start with a Beachbody Premium Membership, you’re first 30 days is FREE, and it gives you access to Beachbody On-Demand, an amazing meal planner, and much more! Vigorous Exercise Beats Moderate Exercise for Flu Prevention

"Just walk more."

So we all hear that, right? And yes, moderate exercise is better than no exercise and for many, many people, walking a few miles a day would be a marvelous step (joke) in the right direction. However, it turns out that really vigorous exercise, like running, playing soccer, or going for a hard bike ride may do a lot more for you in terms of disease prevention. Here's a recent study reported by BBC News that makes just that point,

Light Up Your Brain With Exercise

Ever wonder why many people (including possibly yourself) truly enjoy exercise so much? I mean, sure, exercise is pretty much universally touted as being 'good for you', but can it really get you high? Huh? Well, I'm not so sure about the 'getting high' part, but this article from Fast Company about what really goes on in our brains when we exercise is enlightening. Check it out.

How to Boost Your Metabolism

Which do you want first—the good news or the bad news? The bad news? You got it, glass-is-half-empty exerciser. Here it is: There is no magical way to speed up your metabolism. So all the mystical pills and potions that promise to ignite a lasting metabolic torch in your body won't pay off as advertised.

Woman about to bite a Chili Pepper

"Some people will say this food or that food speeds metabolism, or 'I saw this pill on Dr. Oz!' but that just won't happen," says Dr. Felicia Stoler, DCN, MS, RD, FACSM, author of The Healthy Way to Lose Weight and Feel Great. "But it's hard to quantify what speeds up metabolism when it comes to food because you're not eating that food by itself."

And while there are foods that have been shown to provide a metabolic jolt—like capsaicin in chili peppers and fiber-rich foods like brown rice and oatmeal—they only supply a small change and don't greatly impact weight loss individually.

Another common cop-out is to blame aging, as if your inability to pop and lock on the dance floor somehow correlates to your body's inability to efficiently burn calories.

"When you talk about metabolism slowing down as you age you're also talking about bone density, lean muscle mass, and voluntary activity slowing down," Dr. Stoler explains. "Those things change over time and with age. So it's not just 'I'm old!' and there's no accountability." Mr. P90X®, Tony Horton, is 55-years-old, so think about that the next time you use that excuse. If you're feeling creaky, the more you move, the better you'll feel.

Remember when we said there was good news? Here it is: There are things you can do to increase your metabolism. And the even, uh, gooder news—the things that can help you boost your metabolism aren't all that difficult to implement into your daily routine.

Use Resistance Training

Woman Working Out with Weights

A long-distance run burns plenty of calories and can give you an edge on Sir Bitey when that inevitable zombie apocalypse occurs and it's time to flee for your life. But, you'll want to add resistance training to your workout, too.

A 2012 study published in the Journal of Translation Medicine found that, compared to a traditional resistance training workout, using high-intensity interval resistance training (this is when you train with heavy weights for a short duration of time) increased their resting metabolic rate in the 24 hours following the workout.1

"People who only do cardio are training their muscles for endurance and burning calories, but they're not building muscle mass," Dr. Stoler says. "In terms of increasing your resting metabolic rate, you need more resistance, weight-bearing exercise."

Muscle burns more calories than fat, so putting on more muscle equates to a higher resting metabolic rate.

Keep in mind that you don't need to become an Olympic power lifter. Many cardio-based workouts, including INSANITY® or anything plyometric, contain a resistance aspect to them. Still, it's a good idea to get some good old-fashioned weight work into your program every now and then.

Eat, Eat, Eat

Fasting is the wrong way to go about jump-starting your metabolism. In fact, leaving your tank on empty for too many hours has an adverse effect since your body needs food to operate. According to Dr. Stoler, eating small, healthy meals more often revs up your metabolism by keeping your digestive system working.

"Having a healthy diet when you're eating more often keeps the furnace going without letting your energy levels deplete," she says. "It's like your furnace; it's better to run it at a steady rate instead of turning it off and then coming home and cranking it up."

Sleep, Sleep, Sleep

The later you stay up, the worse your diet gets. No, we're not stalking you; a two-week sleep study from the University of Pennsylvania found that night owls tended to feast on fattier foods, with men gaining more weight than women, and black people gaining more weight than white people.2 (Wait, when did science become so discriminatory?)

A smaller 2011 study revealed why sleep and weight gain might be connected. Researchers found that when you're sleep deprived your prefrontal cortex—the portion of your brain responsible for cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functions—is also sluggish. This impedes your willpower to resist fatty foods, which makes the gelatinous blob of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) that's disguised as dessert look far more appetizing than it would have had you hit the sack at a decent hour.

Drink More

Man Drinking Water after a Run

Water, you lushes! Not only can dehydration trick you into thinking you're hungry and decrease your mental and physical abilities, studies have found that drinking as little as 16 ounces of water led to an increase in energy expenditure. You should be downing more water than that. How much, exactly? We're so glad you asked. Take your bodyweight and divide it in half, and then add the word "ounces" to the answer. So if you weigh 150 pounds, you'd aim for 75 ounces of agua per day.

Why Shorter Workouts Work

Tony Horton and Shaun T help us break down all the benefits

Why Shorter Workouts Work

Want to get ripped—and much less likely to quit? Spend less time working out. Yes, you heard that right! Fitness legends Tony Horton and Shaun T are here to explain why shorter workouts are changing the game and why P90X3 and FOCUS T25 are the perfect programs for short-term gains and long-lasting success.

Ready for more traditional, time-consuming workouts this year? Not so fast.

Multiple-hour sweat sessions are so 2013. This year, it’s all about efficiency. Not a minute wasted. Get in, get out, and get on with the rest of your day.

It’s true; shorter, more intense workouts are all the rage. That’s because now you can slash your workout time in half—without sacrificing the results.

Intensity, not duration, that’s the key. And to prove the point, we’ve enlisted the help of two men who pretty much invented the word intensity: Tony Horton and Shaun T.

There’s never been a better time to learn about the benefits of shorter workouts. With the arrival of the FOCUS T25 Challenge Pack and the extension of the P90X3Challenge Pack in January, you can get in the best shape of your life!

Shorter is the new longer

The rise in popularity of shorter workouts is no accident. There’s science behind it.

“Studies have shown that shorter workouts can be as effective, or even better than longer workouts,” says Shaun T. “The goal is to make every second and every minute of your workout count.”

A major benefit of shorter workouts is that the most dramatic body transformations happen in the first 30 minutes of exercise. “People are more likely to train harder when the routines are shorter,” Tony Horton teaches. “For example, you’d run a 200 meter race faster than you would a 10k.”

Makes perfect sense. But how will P90X3 and FOCUS T25 do in the long run?

Beat the burnout

The shorter time frame in programs like P90X3 and FOCUS T25 help eliminate one of the biggest problems with more conventional programs: burnout!

“Burnout happens when your body isn’t prepared to do what you’re asking of it,” cautions Tony. “It also happens when you can’t make the time to do one hour-plus workouts.” He adds, “This is one of the many reasons why we created P90X3. It’s P90X® and X2 intensity in just thirty minutes.”

FOCUS T25 is, as the name suggests, 25 minutes. And Shaun says the variety in T25 is the perfect remedy to beat workout boredom. “We constantly change the focus minute by minute so you work one part of the body and rest others,” he says. “That’s what makes it so effective. No nonsense. Just results. 25 minutes and then you’re done!”

The skinny on the new programs

So what is it exactly that separates these new programs from the pack?

“P90X3 is very unique because it combines muscle confusion from P90X, muscle integration from P90X2, and muscle acceleration in fast paced workouts,” says Tony. “It’s brutal, but still awesome.”

Shaun serves up a couple reasons why T25 may be your go-to program. “It’s a total body training program combining cardio, resistance, upper and lower body circuits, strength, and core,” he says. “We’ve effectively selected moves and sequences that are necessary to see results. No matter what your age or fitness level, you can do this.”

The resolution solution

It’s been well documented that most people fail at their January fitness resolutions. Tony offers up some stats for us. “The average person will abandon their New Year’s resolution between February 15 and March 1,” he says. “The reason for this is that good intentions are not well planned out and become overwhelming after a while.”

That’s where P90X3 and T25 will really shine: Long-term appeal. “The variety, fun, and short duration of X3 allows the user to stay consistent from January 1 through December 31—and beyond!” exclaims Tony.

Shaun explains why T25 will keep you and your customers engaged all year long. “Do it first thing when you get up. During your lunch break. Before dinner or before bed. 25 minutes is doable and manageable. There’s no excuses, people.” You have the time, now get it done.

The Rock n Roll Lifestyle Nearly Did James In

In James' own words:

"All I ever wanted to be was a Rock Star. So after high school, I hit the road to make my dream come true. The ups: meeting people, traveling, and performing. The downs: terrible eating habits, dollar menus, and massive amounts of booze. But then I gave it all up when my daughter was born. What I didn’t give up were my bad eating habits. And since I was no longer jumping around a stage like a madman every night, I quickly ballooned up to 240 pounds! Not only was disgusted with myself, I was exhausted all the time and couldn’t keep up with my kid—so I turned to P90X.

Sure, P90X was hard. But what was even harder was giving up the donuts and cheeseburgers. Pathetic, right? Because I didn’t change my diet at first, I barely saw any results. Of course I blamed it on the workouts. Then I found my Beachbody Coach, the P90X nutrition guide, and the Beachbody message boards—and those three things are what got me in line. After plowing through P90X and getting in shape, I had no choice but to do the sequel.

I thought I got great results with P90X, but after doing P90X2, I was blown away. P90X2 was great because it really strengthen my core, which was my weak link (which isn't so weak anymore). My abs are now so much more defined and my stability has greatly improved.

Throughout my transformation I used three Beachbody supplements. Energy &Endurance Pre-Workout Formula®—which gave me a good kick in the pants early each morning. It lit my fire and helped me focus on the task at hand. I also took Results and Recovery Formula®. Man, this stuff is DELICIOUS—and effective! I remember trying to do a Chest and Back workout without it and it was brutal. Then there’s Shakeology®. If I had to choose one supplement to use for the remainder of my journey, Shakeology would be it. After just the first week, I’d wake up in a better mood and full of energy. Finally, my body felt fueled. Now I'm more upbeat and much happier. I can't imagine a day without it.

Thanks to Beachbody, I'm no longer the person I used to be. Gone is that guy who used to walk into a convenience store and head straight for the hotdog rack. Now I'm a product of the product. Friends and family have noticed my change and want to know how I did it, so I tell them. I've developed a passion—no, an obsession for this lifestyle and for helping others. I know I’m setting a great example for my daughter, my friends, and my family—and it feels amazing. Every day I look in the mirror and marvel at my progress, which makes me push even harder. I’m so excited to see where I can take this body of mine. Thanks Beachbody. And my daughter thanks you too!"

We have a P90X and Shakeology Challenge Group starting June 17. Let me know if you'd like to join us for this virtual workout group. For info on the combined P90X Challenge Pack, CLICK HERE.

Get Back to Pre-Baby Weight!

Would you like to get back to your pre-baby weight? Kattlaya did just that with TurboFire and Shakeology. Real people, real results with Beachbody.

In Kattlaya's own words:

"After I first got married, every night became date night. We had so much fun, but that’s when the weight started to pile on. By the time I got pregnant with my first baby, I was at my heaviest—167 pounds. But I wasn’t worried. Everyone said nursing would take care of the weight.

But it didn’t. And by the time I was pregnant with my second child, my husband and I were living in Okinawa and I was a mess. I shot up from a size 4 to a size 12 and I felt horrible, sick, embarrassed, ashamed. Even worse, I felt like a bad mother because I was too obese to do anything. I was living in paradise, but too fat to enjoy it.

When my child’s teacher took maternity leave, I friended her on Facebook and watched as she shared her post-baby TurboFire® transformation. I was amazed. And so inspired, I decided to give TurboFire a try.

And am I glad I did! TurboFire is SO fun and addicting, I can’t stand to miss a day. Chalene makes it so much fun. Every time I was ready to quit, Chalene would say, “YOU’RE NOT TIRED!” and I would just keep going. But the best part is the “after burn effect”—it felt like the weight was just melting off. And it was. I lost 29 pounds and 25 inches! I went from a size 12 to a size 4. I never, ever thought I would be that size again.

My life is so different. At one point, I was eating fast food once—okay, maybe two times a day. But Shakeology changed that. Shakeology curbed my cravings for sweets—especially chocolate.

Losing the weight was great. Dropping sizes was awesome. But here’s the best part of my transformation—before I started, my doctor said I had to make major changes if I didn’t want to go on cholesterol medication. That was a real wake up—at 27, I didn’t want to be on medication for the rest of my life.

Thanks to TurboFire and Shakeology, my cholesterol levels drooped so far my doctor is amazed. At my last checkup, he said to keep doing what I’m doing.

And that’s exactly what I plan to do. As a TurboFire fanatic. As a Beachbody Coach. And as a mom who’s so thankful she can now be the kind of mom she always wanted to be—active, healthy, and fit enough to play with her kids. Thanks Beachbody!"

Body Beast Success Story - Rui

Rui went from mush to ripped with Beachbody's Body Beast.

In Rui's own words:

"My days of eating whatever I wanted and it NOT impacting my body are long gone. At 29, my metabolism is very different now than what it was even a few years back. Not wanting to let my body turn into complete mush, I decided it was time to clean up my eating as well as adopt a fitness routine that would give me that extra edge. I hunted around for a while and was bummed that I couldn’t find a workout that gave me the kind of results I so badly desired. Then one day an old college buddy (who’s now a Beachbody Coach) showed me his Body Beast® transformation video and I was hooked—he looked AMAZING! The second I saw his results I said, “That's EXACTLY what I want! And I’m going to get it, no matter what. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, is going to get in my way.”

I chose Body Beast because I really wanted to bulk up, not slim down. And unfortunately, it’s really hard for my body to gain muscle; but when it comes to packing on the fat, I gain that like nobody’s business. Early on in the program I quickly realized that my biggest hurdle was making the right meals choice to support my workouts. Nutrition, nutrition, nutrition—it really makes you or breaks you—and I wanted it to make me. So I joined Coach Charlie’s Body Beast Facebook Group where we shared recipes that are guy-friendly, as well as shared ideas on how to prepare our meals by doing things like cooking in bulk on the weekends so you have healthy options throughout the week.

The other key player in my transformation was drinking Shakeology® every single day. And since I'm always on the run in the mornings, instead of grabbing some empty calorie junk at a deli on the way to work, I drink my Shakeology and it sets me up for success throughout the rest of the day. Shakeology’s awesome. It’s fast, it’s healthy, and it fights off hunger between meals. I’m hooked.

But the best part of Body Beast is its overall mentality of BEAST UP! That attitude really gets me going. Plus, Sagi’s a great trainer. He's motivational and he has the perfect beast mentality. Overall, I feel so much better now that I beasted up with this program and changed my diet. I have so much more stamina, and feel healthier and sexier. You name it, I feel it. To sum it up, I feel like The Terminator: Stronger, faster, smarter! Before Beast, I hadn’t seen my abs since I was in high school. I thought it was a lost cause. When I started seeing them again I was super proud of myself. I still can't believe it. Are they still there? (Checking now) OK. They’re still there—WOW!

When I look in the mirror and see the way my clothes now fit, I know I lost a ton of fat; I just replaced the flab with a ton of rock-solid muscle. I even beefed up my biceps by 2 inches and my body fat went from 13% to the single digit of 9%.

But I couldn’t have done it without my amazing Coach, Charlie. He’s been there for me every step of the way. From motivating me to do my workouts on days I felt lazy, to driving home the point that the nutrition is the MOST important part of the formula. Charlie has definitely played a huge role in my success—thanks buddy. And thanks Sagi and Beachbody. Because of you guys, I am now—The Beast."

How to Choose a Challenge Group

So you've already heard about Beachbody Challenge Groups, either from a Team Beachbody Coach, another Beachbody customer, or perhaps you orginally heard about them on Facebook, YouTube.com, or other social media. Perhaps you saw the cool little video that sums them up:

Ever Feel Like This?

The idea of Challenge Groups is appealing to you and it makes sense. Combining nutrition, exercise, support, and incentives is a killer combination to reach health and fitness goals.

There's a still a question in many minds, however, (and perhaps yours), and that is, "Which Challenge Group should I join?"

The quick answer, and the longer one, too, is it's all about the fitness program. Now, the success of any group is based on the strength of the members - the more people participate in a group's private Facebook page, the more powerful the support component of the group will be, and that's key, but otherwise, all things being equal with nutrition, support, and incentives, the choice comes down to which exercise program do you want to do now?

Your Team Beachbody Coach is the best person to help you make the decision about which fitness program to select, assuming of course that there is a Challenge Group available for the program you eventually pick. If you want to a program and there's none going on when you want to get started, consider asking your Coach if s/he will host the group if you recruit a half dozen or so of your friends to join with you. Chances are pretty good your Coach will be delighted to host a group you build - it's not essential that the host does the program along with the group, or even has ever done it, since Beachbody provides Coaches with a wide array of support materials for running Challenge Groups with more than 20 of the most popular programs.

So what factors do you consider in making your exercise program choice? There are three primary factors:
  1. Overall fitness level
  2. Past experience, skill levels, and ability
  3. Personal Preference
Fitness Level: If you're currently in great shape or in pretty poor shape, your choices are easier. If your already very fit you'll likely want to do a Challenge Group based on one of the more extreme programs like P90X, Insanity, TurboFire, Les Mills Combat, Less Mills Pump, or maybe even Body Beast. If you haven't worked out in a long time and especially if you have lots of weight to lose, Slimin6 or Power 90 would be better choices.

If you're somewhere between being in very poor shape or awesome condition, let your Coach be your guide. She or he can ask some questions to help you choose.

Past experience, skill levels, and ability - If you were a college jock or used to run until just a few years ago, those both can give your Coach clues to which programs would fit. While you should always check with your doctor or other medical professional about any new fitness program, some of our workout programs were designed specifically for people with limited abilities due to various conditions - for example Tai Cheng is an awesome program that stresses balance, flexibility and strength building that, while it's great for golfers and surfers and anyone for whom body alignment and control is important, it's also often a great choice for people in rehab from surgery or implants (knees or hips, for example).

Personal Preference - What do you like to do? It's important that you enjoy your workout program. If you like going full-tilt cardio, that gives your Coach some suggestion, like possibly Insanity, Turbofire, or Les Mills Combat. If you like to dance, give Brazil Butt Lift or Hip Hop Abs some consideration.

What's Next? - There is one other consideration when choosing a Challenge Group fitness program, and that's when you're about to finish one Challenge Group and then want to try something different the next time around. Some people will go from P90X to Insanity then back to P90X, then Body Beast, and then back to P90X again. People who like Power 90 and want to stick with Tony Horton can choose to 'graduate' to Ten Minute Trainer or P90X and then after that jump up to P90X2.

So there are several factors in choosing the best exercise program for you next Challenge Group. The important thing is to decide, commit, and then succeed! That's the path to health and fitness with Beachbody Challenge Groups!

The Beachbody Challenge, along with Challenge Packs and Challenge Groups, gives people the fitness and nutritional products and the support they need for success, plus the chance for financial rewards!

The Beachbody Challenge is a program that anyone can join for free to make a personal commitment for health and fitness.

65 Challenge Day! 12-15-11

Today is the day!

So, how about you? Will you challenge yourself to do [insert your age] pushups, situps, pullups, chinups, and then walk/run for 65 minutes? You can if you put your mind to it, decide, commit, take the appropriate action (which means eat right and exercise) and train for it.

I encourage you to do your own age challenge and I'd love to hear how it goes for you.

If you have health and fitness goals but haven't had success reaching them before, let's talk. My passion is working with people helping them reach their goals and I'd love to talk with you.

65 Challenge Day 21 12-14-11

Is this the calm before the storm? Tomorrow's my 65 Challenge. I've been preparing since Thanksgiving Day and I am pumped!

65 Challenge Day 20 12-13-11

This is Christmas party season! Three this week plus networking events 3 days as well. Having fun AND taking it very easy with desserts. I want to stay on track but allow myself to enjoy the parties - so making choices - like, OK, I'll hold off on the cookies but will try the meatballs! Yeah, life is tough.

Getting ready for Thursday's big challenge day. Today (Tuesday) I did the P90X X Stretch, then a 5K Walk/Run (third best time so far), and then Zumba class. I'm glad I'm doing  all three as each adds something special to my workout routine. (And I'm grateful my business allows me to do all this!)
