Wilmington Professional Group at North Kerr Spalon

It was a gorgeous day in Wilmington, perfect for the Wilmington Professional Group's networking event/cookout at North Kerr Spalon's new location on North Kerr Avenue. Below three of the four Wilmington Professional Group's organizers, Sandy Powell of North Kerr Spalon, Neal Whitington of Zutu Marketing, and Arian Kelley of PrePaid Legal greet arrival Fred Kumpel of Stickland's Window Coverings.

Accupuncturist Kris Peterson

I met David Harrison of Pre-Paid Legal - we had a nice chat about market niches and deciding the best ways to help people. Here David is with Rick Huston of Insphere Insurance Solutions. Rick and I talked a bit about using short video clips to convey vital information (see our less-than-vital short clip below).

Klif Kinnamon, a man of few words, from Zutu Marketing.

Next Media's Austin Thomas, personal trainer Dee Whitington, and Nsalo Salon stylist Melissa Kinnamon.

Here's the clip Rick and I shot. Using video on blogs and websites is becoming increasingly common as a way to communicate your message (even if your message is that using video is becoming increasingly common).

Welcome to Hyperbole, It's My Kind of Town

"Life in hyperbole. It's a choice. It has consequences, but for me it's the only way to fly. Why choose a life of restraint?" - Being Bruce

I fully accept that my attitude, my approach to life, and even my communication are loaded with figurative exclamation points. Notice I didn't write "I confess" or "I admit". I accept, allow, and rejoice in living an enthusiastic life.

At one point in my life I'm pretty sure I made the conscious decision to live "enthusiastically". It may have been at a pivotal time for me when I was 28 - you know, the time many American males start to realize that it could be appropriate to start acting like an adult, maybe? (LOL)

Regardless of when or why I decided in favor of or made the shift toward consistent positivity, it's how I choose to live now. And here's the thing, if I'm going to be positive, why not crank it up and BE REALLY POSITIVE!?!?

Sometimes it's true that "good is good enough", especially if you're trying to get something started but are stuck in perfectionism or maybe even delaying because of concern about how something will go over. In those instances, as my buddy and mentor, Bob "The Teacher" Jenkins says, "TARL" - Take Action Revise Later.

But while "good is good enough" is an effective jumpstart when projects are in the odd delay moment, a life that's just "good" doesn't cut it, at least not for me. I'm absolutely grateful for just being alive in this moment, so in that sense anything more is gravy, or frosting, or gilding. However, given the choice, why not choose "GREAT!!"?

There are many easy arguments against being positive. Sorry, I don't buy 'em. And now, of course, there's the vaunted "scientific proof" that being positive is good for you in Dr. Barbara Frederickson's Positivity, published just last year and based on solid research. (Note, the book title links to Amazon but isn't an affiliate link, we just think it's an awesome, important book.)

So I choose to be positive and to crank it up. Sometimes it's a bit extreme, but guess what? Life is seldom boring when you live in Hyperbole.

So what about you? How does positivity work for you? I'd love to hear from you on this.

LIVE!! It's Marge and Bruce's Website!!

OK, this has been in progress for a while, and we shifted our focus and some of the uses of the site along with way, but as of 5AM our website, QuantumResultsCoaching.com is live!

First of all, props to Tayloe & Gray for designing the site exactly to our specifications and making possible the various things we wanted it to do. Andrew Gray and Nathan Tayloe stuck with us as we considered different design features, merchant account and shopping carts, links to partners, links to our blogs, then changing to embed one of our blogs actually into the site, then converting the whole thing to WordPress. The list goes on and on. We are pumped and happy.

Yeah, there are some immediate changes and fixes we need to make, and all are based on input we provided that was incorrect or has since changed.

Finally, we have a real website. As our friend Maran Banta of Atlanta says, "We were stepping on our own hose." in getting this thing out - we delayed by making changes in direction and being distracted by business and by life. But now it's up! Woohoo!

So check out our website, QuantumResultsCoaching.com and let us know what you think. We'd love to hear from you.

Wilmington Professional Group at Past, Present, Future Digital 4-14-10

Yesterday's weather wasn't quite as stunningly beautiful as the rest of the week, but that didn't stop harm the turnout at the Wilmington Professional Group's outdoor networking event at Josh Caine's Past Present Future Digital.

Below co-host T. Neal Whittington made sure everyone had what they needed.

Stephanie Willliams of Edward Jones was the sponsor for the event. That's Stephanie below, the blond woman with the gray top. You can also see behind and in front of the table (to the right of Neal) Sandy Powell, Hair Color Specialist of North Kerr Spalon & WPG Event Coordinator (waving hello with a big smile), entrepreneur Arian Kelley, Jon Hicks of Ethos Design, and accupuncturist Kris Peterson.

Another person who always has a smile is Thornton Burgess of Jubilee Snooze and Cruise - the B&B on a 45 foot yacht.

Eleazar Herrera and Manual Lopez both of Ethos. Manual's the one bustin' a move.

So, with no moves going on, here are Manual, Jon, an Eleazar.

Funny how you can always pick David Merrill out in a crowd. I guess it's because of his height?

And Michael Byrd of Wordwright Web is a standout because he's always nattily attired with shirt, tie, and pleated pants.

Three favs in this shot, Stylist Supreme Melissa Kinnamon (of Nsalo Salon), her spouse Klif Kinnamon of Zutu Marketing, and, making his approach from the background, Ken Schiess of HdVest.

It was a good time. Thanks to all, especially Josh, Sandy, Arian, and Neal for organizing and hosting the event. And Stephanie, thanks for putting on the generous spread!

Hey folks, I'm running around two counties today to various meetings.

Here's where I went for my second meeting.

Anyone know what building this is and where it's located?

A free copy of my book 31 Days to Networking Event Mastery

To the first person who emails the correct answer to me at Bruce@QuantumResultsCoachign.com .

Following directions counts. Sending the answer to any other email address for me won't count, no phone calls or text messages. Gotta be the first one who sends the email to that address.

Brunswick Stew Cook-Off, February 6, 2010

It's always fun to try a new festival and this Marge and I headed out to Shallotte to the Brunswick Stew Cook-Off. Held today on the grounds of the Rourk Woods subdivision, this annual event is organized by the Brunswick County Chamber of Commerce. Marge and I were only able to go for an hour or so but in that time we saw some old friends, said hello to some recent acquaintances, and met some good cooks!

You can look below for a poster that describes the origin and history of Brunswick Stew, and, if that's not the way it really was, it's the way it should have been. Today Brunswick Stew generally has chicken, vegetables, sauce, seasonings and what ever else the cooks dream up to make their stew unique and tasty. The Cook-Off competition works like this: you pay $5 for six tickets; exchange each ticket at one of the 20 odd booths for a cup of stew, a plastic spoon and napkin and maybe piece of some type of bread (the variety was impressive) and hot sauce if you wish. Later on you vote for your favorite by putting colored tickets (one for best stew, one for best presentation). The award categories are for best stew in booths from media, nonprofits, individuals and restaurants.

Here's Marge sampling stew at one of the most fancy of the booths.

Marge with BCCC Events Director Megan Masser.

Linda Stinson of Patriot Management Systems, BCCC Executive Director Cathy Altman, Marge, and in the background with the New York Yankees cap, Billy Noble of Nobles Landscaping.

Same group as above with the addition of Chris Tyler of Carolina Tents and Events.

Cathy Altman and me.

Marge talking with one of the individual booth entrants.

The Purple Onion Cafe (a popular restaurant in Shallotte) had an attractive booth.

There were a few nonfood booths, this one sold handcrafted waterbirds made from PVC!

A look at the main venue.

The VFW entry was an award winner in the past I my tongue and tummy can attest that they know their stew!

This blow up attraction did its job, attracting kids.

A colorful line of booth tents.

A band was scheduled to start at noon but we had to leave prior to their arrival.

Here's the poster that explains how it all started. If you click on the image you should see a larger, more readable version.

Lancaster Farm had a huge cast iron pot of stew. I got to stir it with a canoe paddle.

Here's a closer look at the Lancaster Farm stew.

And one more of the proud stew stirrer.

This was where we voted for best stew.

Finally, a couple more shots of various booths at the Cook-Off.

It was a a little chilly (in the upper 40s) so the hot stew was wonderful and I didn't try one I didn't like (I sampled 9 in all). One had a mustardy flavor, one I was sure had curry, and others tasted like the best homemade stew most of us have ever had. Overall it was a fun time for a good cause. We'll be back next year.
