Strictly Business at Midtown Seafood - September 30, 2009
Once again The Big Talker FM held a Strictly Business event at Midtown Seafood on Oleander Drive in Wilmington, NC. This weekly Wilmington area business networking event rotates between several locations, with focus on a specific local charitable cause or area good works organization. This week's organization is Lower Cape Fear Hospice & LifeCareCenter.
The event was held in the open lounge at Midtown Seafood.
As usual there were plentiful (free) appetizers.
In case you're looking for it, this sign can be seen from a distance on busy Oleander Drive.

Chris' Cosmic Kitchen
When Marge and I met Kristin and Chris Lubben at a Wilmington Tweetup in May we had already heard of their popular restaurant on Eastwood Road in Wilmington. This morning we finally went for breakfast.
Located in a strip mall on the way to Wrightsville Beach,
Chris' Cosmic Kitchen presents excellent food in a slightly retro-funk atmosphere with plenty of artwork.
Not everyone will get to see the item below -- it's a coat hook in the men's room.

This three-dimensional piece overlooked our table.
We both had omelets (Marge had a Greek omelet and I had a Tex-Mex omelet) that were so good we ate 'em before I remembered I wanted to take a photo (that happens a lot). So ... here's a shot of the knock-you-on-your-knees Cheesecake Kristin and Chris brought to the Tweetup.

Win Great Prizes Today in Open House Drawings in Brunswick Forest in Leland NC
The Wilmington/Leland area has not seen an open house drawing extravaganza like this.
Every weekend day in June two great existing homes in the Jefferson Landing neighborhood of Brunswick Forest in Leland, North Carolina will both be open from 1-4PM.
We'd love to have as many people as possible see these two awesome properties. In order to add a little incentive we'll be having two drawings each weekend day through June, one for each house Saturday and Sunday. In order to enter the drawing you have to tour them both and then fill out comment sheets about both of them. At the end of the day we'll match up the comment sheets from each house, draw two winners (using a random number generator) and then call the winners to find out which one of the following four great prizes they want:
1. a round of golf at Magnolia Greens Golf Plantation (including cart)
2. a $35 gift certificate to Front Street Brewery in Downtown Wilmington
3. a $35 gift certificate to Antonios Pizza and Pasta Restaurant (three locations: 1 in Leland and 2 in Wilmington)
4. (for the first two weekends) Either 1 VIP ticket or 2 general admission tickets to The Buckinghams concert on June 20th).
Buyers, friends, REALTORS, anyone over the age of 18 is invited to participate in this drawing. Mostly we want you to see the houses, but we'd also like to meet you to give you a chance in the drawings, so come on out!

Bed & Breakfast on the Cape Fear River
Where's Marge in the photo below? She's on the top deck of a 45' 1966 Columbia yacht docked at the Riverwalk in Downtown Wilmington, North Carolina. The ship's name is the Sea Star and you can learn a whole lot more about her, her owners Thurman and Ayres Burgess, and the cruising, dining, and bed & breadfast services and experiences to be had at http://www.jubileesnoozeandcruise.com/.
To get to the Sea Star, proceed down the Riverwalk from Market Street along this wooden path.

Just before you get to the docking space of the Henrietta III, you'll notice a gate with a walkway down to a floating dock.
From the walkway you can see the Sea Star.
Here's Marge going through the gate down to the dock (in the background you can see the Henrietta III and the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge).
Once we boarded we spent some pleasant time talking with Ayres and Thurman.
There are several dining areas on board, this is the aft area, ready for an informal meal. Tables can also be set forward.
The full-service galley below decks is where the meals are prepared.
This is the main stateroom - there are two other staterooms and two heads.
Here's the main salon, just forward of the galley.
The huge sundeck is probably where I'd spend most of my time, with a book or chatting with passersby on the Riverwalk.

Wilmington Downtown Meet & Greet - June 3, 2009
This afternoon the first ever Downtown Wilmington Meet & Greet. Planned to be a monthly event held at Front Street Brewery on the first Wednesday of each month, from 5-6:30PM, with free appetizers and great chances to network with other folks who live, work, or do business in downtown Wilmington.
Kristen Beckmeyer, part owner of Coastal Cupcakes, and a new intern (a little help with her name, please, I forgot to write it down) displayed samples of the wares from their store located on the corner of 2nd and Princess.
Front Street Brewery certainly broke out the food. Under the banner there was a generous set up of chips and salsa.
And in the back corner there were four hot trays of amazing hot appetizers.
I'll betcha if you thought about going but decided not to, this food alone will get you there next month.

A newcomer to town, Patrick Grassi is recently out of the service and just arrived in Wilmington and moved in downtown this week. Welcome, Patrick.
This was a great turnout for the first in what will likely be a long series of Downtown Wilmington Meet & Greets. Thanks to everyone at Front Street - you got this off to a great start. As usual, Wilmington area residents and business folk showed that if you hold a networking event, people will come.
Update - shortly after originally posting this Ellie Craig wrote to tell me that after I left the event got "wild" - in a good way. I guess the crowd got even bigger. Can't wait till next month. Way to go, FSB!!
